Pockets in a square space
Taking on an existing unit with a need to maintain most of the built-in items whilst changing the space to suit the Client’s needs called for attention to the more subtle opportunities to develop the house. Thus the concept was to find design opportunities through pocket spaces.
As the living/dining room and bedroom were fixed, 1 side of the bedroom wall was hacked off to expand the view of the dining area. This allowed light to be drawn into the hallway whilst maintaining a separate room. At the end of the hallway, the existing master bedroom door was removed and shifted to the side, creating an opportunity for a display cabinet where the Clients can place flowers, a cherished act of love they show to each other. Where a wall becomes a backing for the room, timber beadings are added, creating depth and visual interest between spaces.
