RE-Hive
Mass customised elder and student care
Re-Hive is an eldercare and youth hostel hybrid that explores the possibility of mass customisation that enables the client to contribute to the design of the space. The project revolves around a modular hexagon, its shape was chosen for its ability to connect with other hexagons cleanly in 6 directions. The river it is situated in provides the medium of movement for these modules, allowing modules to be added or removed to suit the needs of the people, providing an extremely tailored architecture as the elderly or youth desire. This contribution gives agency to the users, making them participants rather than spectators. The youths and seniors are able to take ownership of the space and programs as desired.
The modular design of each hive is detailed to the individual beam, ensuring few unique parts and wet joints, while allowing for customisation of space and facade to suit the different program types. Each pod is powered by marine propellers that enable movement along the river, with locks to hold the modules in place. This allows for a plethora of combinations of space and design for both the users and public members. By being adaptable to various programs over time, the eldercare remains relevant for seniors even as their needs and desires change while retaining its core function. Being adaptive also reduces wastage from rebuilding, and key components can be adapted for reuse as needed.
