Dwelling was the first housing building project, with the aim of designing a house that expresses the same form as the artist's dwelling within. The site given was at Commonwealth Ave, and each person was given an equal plot. of which their house will reside. The aim was to provide a communal living experience, with various artists living side by side in a neighbourhood.
Site analysis, such as weather patterns, sun and noise was studied to provide an optimum housing layout that responds to the surroundings.
The chosen artist for the housing project was Mikhail Baryshnikov, a renowned ballet dancer. The concept of the house was to extract the principles of his ballet moves, such as the lightness and elegance of each dance set.
By using a ribbon as a design form for the building, this ribbon moves up and down and drapes over the site, forming the walls and ceilings as well as the space within. The edges are sharpened to show the sudden pause before a new set of dance moves was created. With this, the entire form was lifted, with the lower floors transparent to express lightness and a floating effect visually.
